The Design Heritage
The University of Texas at Austin boasts a legacy defined by legendary triumphs, from the historic 1963 national title under Darrell Royal to the unforgettable 2005 Rose Bowl victory led by Vince Young. This premium chess set honors those historic milestones by incorporating the iconic Burnt Orange and White color scheme directly into the alternating maple and walnut playing squares. The custom-carved chess pieces reflect this rich athletic history, featuring a stylized Bevo design for the knights and architectural details inspired by the UT Tower for the rooks.
Placing this heirloom-quality board in your home establishes an immediate connection to generations of Longhorn alumni and sports enthusiasts. It acts as a sophisticated focal point for strategic gameplay or quiet reflection, sparking conversations about legendary SEC matchups, historic rivalries, and the enduring spirit of Texas athletics. It is designed for those who demand both intellectual stimulation and an uncompromising display of collegiate pride.
Care and Maintenance
To maintain the pristine luster of the premium hardwoods, wipe the board and pieces weekly with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, ammonia, or abrasive polishes, which can strip the protective UV-resistant lacquer. If a deeper clean is required, use a slightly damp cloth followed immediately by a dry towel, ensuring no moisture pools on the wooden joints or within the integrated storage drawers.
With its grand 21-inch by 21-inch footprint, this board requires a flat, stable surface such as a dedicated game table, executive desk, or library credenza. The bottom of the board features non-slip felt pads to protect your furniture from scratches, making wall-mounting unnecessary while ensuring secure tabletop positioning. Keep the set away from direct heat registers, humidifiers, and prolonged exposure to intense afternoon sunlight to preserve the rich burnt orange coloration for decades to come.
What materials are used to construct the chess pieces?
The chess pieces are individually carved from solid maple and walnut hardwoods. The white pieces retain their natural light maple grain, while the opposing pieces are finished in a custom-formulated, deep burnt orange stain that matches official University of Texas athletic specifications. Each piece is heavily weighted and fitted with a green felt base to prevent scratching on the playing surface.
Does this board feature storage for the chess pieces?
Yes, the wooden cabinet features two integrated, velvet-lined pull-out drawers equipped with brass pulls. Each drawer contains individual, custom-molded slots to securely hold all 32 chess pieces, protecting them from dust, friction, and accidental damage when the set is not in active play.
Is this chess set officially licensed by the NCAA?
This product is an officially licensed NCAA collectible, produced in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin. It features authentic school colors, approved athletic branding, and the official collegiate hologram of authenticity on the underside of the wooden cabinet.
How does the UV-resistant finish protect the board?
The playing surface and wooden cabinet are sealed with a specialized semi-gloss UV-resistant lacquer. This protective coating filters out harmful ultraviolet rays, preventing the signature burnt orange stain and natural maple wood from yellowing, fading, or cracking when displayed in rooms with high natural light exposure.
